How to Dress Business Casual – Women

Women can often get away with a wider range of attire than men, because let’s face it, guys can’t wear skirts or dresses. The rule of thumb is to let comfort and professionalism guide you when you’re dressing for business casual occasions.

Step 1

Ask your human resources department for official guidelines. Business casual means different things at different companies. At a large corporation, it may mean slacks or a business skirt at a smaller company, it may mean a cotton sweater and a floral skirt.

Step 2

Before you go casual, check your daily planner to make sure you don’t have any meetings that require formal business attire.

Step 3

Select clean, wrinkle-free clothes.

Step 4

Wear a good-quality blouse or knit shirt. Include a casual blazer or cardigan if appropriate.

Step 5

Don pressed khakis or other slacks, or a dress or skirt. If a dress is sleeveless, wear a blazer or cardigan over it. Check your company’s policy before you decide to wear jeans to work.

Step 6

Wear shoes that are comfortable and appropriate for your outfit. Funky platform athletic shoes or strappy sandals might be formal enough for some companies; however, it’s more typical to wear closed-toed leather shoes. Avoid worn-out shoes.

Step 7

Keep the makeup light. Let your natural beauty shine through.

Step 8

Accessorize with a silk scarf or classic bracelet to give your casual outfit a polished look.

Japanese Kimono (Kimono Dresses)

Kimono means something to wear in Japanese. Specifically, kimono refers to traditional Japanese clothes (kimono dresses).

People in Japan wear kimono in various occasions even though kimono dresses aren’t worn as daily clothes in modern Japan. It’s important to wear appropriate kimono, depending on your ages/ marital status and the formality of occasions.

Kinds of Kimono Dresses:

# Tomesode – Formal kimono with regular sleeves for married women. There are kuro-tomesoda (black ones) and iro-tomesode (colored ones).
# Furisode – Formal kimono with long sleeves for unmarried women. Young women wear furisode at wedding receptions, graduations, and so on.
# Homongi – Semi-formal kimono for married and unmarried women. Wedding receptions and tea ceremonies are some of the occastions.
# Tsukesage – Semi-formal kimono for married and unmarried women. Tsukesage is less formal than homongi.
# Iromuji – Colored kimono with no colored patterns.
# Komon – Casual kimono with small patterns.
# Yukata – Casual summer kimono. Yukata can be a nightwear and people wear yukata in ryokan (traditional Japanese inns).
# Shiromuku – white kimono for brides. *Japanese Wedding
# Uchikake – silk brocade kimono for brides.

Suitable footwears for kimono are geta (wooden sandals) and zori (cloth sandals). Also, socks called tabi are worn. There are also kimono jackets called haori and hair ornaments called kanzashi.

Kimono should be wrapped around the body with the left side over the right side. Kimono sash are called obi. There are various types of obi and ways to tie obi, depending on occations. It’s not easy to put on kimono and to tie obi properly. It’s not unusual for people to ask professionals to get them dressed in kimono.

Batik in Java and Bali, Indonesia

Batik is done around the world and has evolved to a very high level in Java and Bali. First done by court ladies for palace attire, it is now widely produced and available to all. While certain motifs were at one time reserved for royalty, today these “forbidden” motifs are available to the public.

Batik is a wax resist process. Bees wax and tree resin are the main ingredients of the wax recipe, but as many as five other components are combined to produce three types of wax recipes that are utilized for drawing the principle lines and for filling them in, for covering large areas that will remain white, and for covering blue-dyed areas.

The most common ways to apply wax to cloth is by stamping with copper caps (pronounced chops) or by drawing with canting (pronounced chanting) tools. Combination fabrics are produced with both caps (for the outlines) and canting (to add details) techniques.

The fabric retains its original color wherever the wax has been applied. The waxed cloth is dyed, then more wax is applied to preserve the dyed color. The process is often repeated – waxing, then dying – several times, then the wax is removed, producing a colorful, patterned fabric. Traditionally, only soga brown and indigo blue dyes were used, but today a rainbow of colors are popular.

Personal Grooming Tips for Business Women

Dressing for success includes more than just choosing the right outfit. To complete your professional look you must also consider accessories and personal grooming. You should always dress to impress clients, investors, and customers, because a winning sales pitch is not enough to seal the deal. A woman’s professional appearance needs to support her professional accomplishments. If your business attire is distracting because it is too sexy, drab, or colorful, your business contacts may focus on how you look, not on your business skills.
Simple, But Important Grooming Tips for Business Women

  • Perfumes, Scents, and Odors in the Workplace: Do not let the first impression you make about yourself be your personal scent preferences!Avoid wearing perfume and heavily-scented products in all business settings. You might like them, but they have no place in a business environment. Scents can trigger asthma, overpower a room, and are often more offensive than pleasing to others.Never smell like smoke (if you smoke in a car, your clothing will always pick up the odor).
  • How to Present Professional Looking Fingernails and Hands: Women often use their hands to talk with so they become a focal point. It is important to have hands and fingernails looking professional — not like you are heading out for a wild night on the town.Nails should be clean, and trimmed or sculpted. Avoid wearing unusual or shocking nail colors. Nail art and nail jewels are not acceptable for business meetings.
  • Hairstyling Tips for Business Women: Style should be neat and conservative, and preferably off the face. With few exceptions, hair color should not be shocking or unusual (leave blue hair for Halloween). Hair sprays and gels that have a strong scent or odor should be avoided.
  • Business Makeup Advice: Keep it simple and appropriate for daytime. Wearing no makeup at all is almost as bad as wearing too much makeup.
  • Appropriate Jewelry for Business Women: Jewelry should not be noisy (no metal bangle bracelets), too large, or costume jewelry. Keep earrings small, simple, and above the earlobe. It is better to wear no jewelry at all, than too wear too much jewelry. But all business women should at least wear a nice, conservative wrist watch.

Demonstrating that you care about your personal appearance communicates to the person you are meeting with that they are important to you. Paying attention to the details of your appearance sends a message to others that you will also pay close attention to business details, and the needs of your customers and clients.
